The real comparison is not simply “springs versus memory foam”. Many current mattresses combine a spring core with memory-foam comfort. The useful question is what each layer contributes.
Start with pocket springs for responsive movement, airflow and partner independence; foam for quiet stability and continuous contouring; hybrid for a blend. Then validate the actual feel.
What the core contributes
Pocket springs work as separated units. They tend to react quickly when a sleeper turns and allow air through the core. Real performance depends on the full build: spring geometry, zoning, reinforcement, top layers and behaviour over time.
HR foam is a continuous block. It can provide stability, quietness and consistent surface use, but density and formulation matter more than the letters “HR”. A sparse specification cannot support confident durability claims.
What memory foam does
Memory foam is normally a comfort layer rather than the whole mattress. It reacts to heat and pressure at different speeds depending on formulation. It can spread contact well, yet a deeply contouring layer may hinder turning and feel warmer.
Do not buy by centimetres of memory foam without context. Density, the support underneath, quilting and the sleeper’s weight all matter. Two layers of the same thickness can feel entirely different.
Movement, heat and the edge
For partners, well-designed pocket springs can limit transfer without removing all vibration. Continuous foam can absorb movement too, sometimes with less bounce. Available width and base stability remain major factors.
Warm sleepers should assess the system: core, covers, protector, duvet and bedroom temperature. Edge behaviour matters when sitting to dress or using the full width, but listings rarely describe it with a comparable measurement.
A quick route to a shortlist
If you turn often and dislike feeling enclosed, begin with hybrids. If you prefer steady, low-bounce support, compare HR builds with moderate comfort layers. If sharing, prioritise movement and usable width before committing to a technology label.
Then consider handling. Tall hybrids can be heavy; double-sided models demand more care. An excellent design on paper is no longer practical when it cannot be handled safely.
