A mattress is not chosen by stacking technologies. It is chosen by ruling out what does not fit your body, sleep habits and the base you own or plan to buy.
Start with feasible size and the feel you tolerate, then add position, body weight, heat, mobility and partner. Construction helps refine the choice; it should not make the decision alone.
1. Set the non-negotiable constraints
Measure the usable floor space, the delivery route and the final bed height. A promising mattress is still wrong if it blocks a wardrobe, cannot turn on the stairs or creates an awkward height for sitting and standing.
Set the width per person too. A 135 cm double gives limited personal space; 150 cm usually offers a more workable margin, while 180 cm gives each side roughly a single-bed width. The room, not a buying chart, sets the feasible answer.
2. Describe sensations instead of numbers
“Firm” can mean steady to one sleeper and unyielding to another. Write down what bothers you now: sagging, shoulder pressure, heat, bounce, partner vibration or difficulty turning. That list is more useful than asking for a seven-out-of-ten firmness.
Side sleepers often need enough give at shoulder and hip. Back sleepers usually watch whether the pelvis drops out of control. Front sleepers tend to tolerate deep sink less well. These are starting observations, not universal prescriptions.
3. Add mobility, temperature and your partner
Deeply contouring foam can relieve pressure but may demand more effort when changing position. A spring hybrid may respond faster and allow more airflow, though the top layers still shape the feel. If standing is hard, examine edge behaviour and total bed height.
For two sleepers, consider movement, schedules, weight difference and temperature. Motion isolation helps, but actual width often changes sleep more than a marketing phrase. Where preferences are opposite, paired mattresses can be more sensible than forcing one shared feel.
4. Check the base–mattress system
The base changes ventilation, response and height. Viscobueno compares upholstered platforms and storage divans: confirm the approved surface, centre support, total load and that the mattress is intended to remain flat.
Finish with delivery, home-adaptation, returns, old-item removal and care terms for the exact variant and seller. Save the offer details. Price and services can change; the underlying fit should remain sound when today’s promotion disappears.
